Mikel Arteta has vowed to end Arsenal’s poor league run against Manchester City when the pair meet at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.

City head to north London for their biggest game of the season this weekend as they face last season’s title challengers. Pep Guardiola’s side arrested their mini-slump with a 3-1 Champions League win at RB Leipzig on Wednesday but have lost their last two domestic matches without Rodri.

The Spaniard will serve the last of his three-game suspension tomorrow, a huge miss for City and a potential opportunity for Arsenal. The Gunners have not beaten their visitors in the Premier League for eight years but Arteta hopes to end that record.

“I think [we can] change it,” Arteta said of the poor record. “When I came here it was so many years at Old Trafford, and also at Stamford Bridge and we’ve done it. So let’s change it.

“I’m aware of the qualities of the opponent, that’s unquestionable. The only thing I put my energy on is that on Sunday we have to be at our best for 100 minutes. That’s the thing we can control and focus on because the rest is something that we can’t.”

Arsenal kicked off their season by beating City on penalties in the Community Shield, and only now will the significance of that early psychological blow be tested. At Wembley, William Saliba did an excellent job keeping Erling Haaland quiet and the Norwegian has been finding life tough in recent weeks. He still has eight goals in 11 appearances but has found the net just once in his last four starts, and Arteta is confident his side can extend that run for one more game.

“We talked about the quality of the opponent, how we want to stop them and what the resources are, like with any other opponent,” he added. “Then we do the individual preparation with the players to understand who they are facing – but we won’t be doing anything different for this game.”
