There has been plenty of focus on Arsenal’s goalkeeping situation this week, as Aaron Ramsdale has found himself dropped for new signing David Raya.

There was some surprise this summer when Arsenal completed a shock deal to bring in the Brentford goalkeeper, on an initial loan which is expected to become permanent.

Raya was initially on the bench, but came in for Ramsdale for the trip to Everton, and continued in goal as Arsenal returned to the Champions League last night against PSV Eindhoven.

With a North London derby coming up on Sunday, it now seems that Raya may continue in goal, and he has now sent a message to Ramsdale amidst the uncertainty over the starting goalkeeper spot.

Speaking to reporters after last night’s victory, Raya claimed that he does not know who will start against Tottenham, but has issued a challenge to Ramsdale to be at the very top of his game.

“It’s his (Mikel Arteta’s) choice, it’s not my choice, and when Aaron comes back in he needs to fight for the team and to win games,” he stated.

“I understand, I think it’s the first time that two top goalkeepers are in the same team so that’s just part of football now, and the gaffer wants two top players for each position and that’s what he’ll have to work with.

“Now I’ve played the last two games and I don’t know what’s going to happen on Sunday.”

Arsenal’s goalkeeping dilemma
Having two top-quality goalkeepers with a similar profile is unchartered territory for Arsenal. Whilst Ramsdale did not perform badly enough to be dropped, Raya’s composure has been evident in his opening two games, although he has not been tested much in terms of shots.

His passing has been exceptional, with his long balls particularly standing out against PSV, and given that he is now building consistency, it seems that the Spaniard will start against Spurs.

Ramsdale for now, will have to settle for a bench role, but could play in the Carabao Cup against Brentford next week. It seems likely that he will eventually get another chance later this season, and possibly in the Champions League.

Arteta has hinted that he could rotate or even substitute his goalkeepers now that he has two quality options, and just because Raya is playing now, Ramsdale’s future should not be under immense scrutiny yet.
