In the first half, Bukayo Saka was brought down by Lucas Paqueta, prompting Taylor to point to the spot. Following a VAR review, the decision was upheld, allowing Martin Odegaard to score from the penalty kick.
The Premier League released a statement supporting the referees’ decision, stating, “The referee’s call of penalty for a foul by Paqueta on Saka was checked and confirmed by VAR, deeming that the contact was sufficient for a penalty.”
Manchester United legend Gary Neville expressed his agreement with the decision, stating he had “no sympathy” for Paqueta. Liverpool icon Jamie Redknapp also criticized Paqueta’s actions, saying, “This is Saka at his best. You have to leave it, you cannot dangle a lazy leg out like Paqueta does.”
Arsenal went on to secure a 5-2 victory over West Ham, with Saka scoring the team’s fifth goal from a penalty kick after Lukas Fabianski committed a reckless challenge on Gabriel. The Premier League again supported the referees’ decision, stating, “The referee’s call of penalty for a reckless challenge by Fabianski on Gabriel was checked and confirmed by VAR.”
