Former FIFA referee and PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has weighed in on the controversy, stating that Leeds United midfielder Ao Tanaka’s challenge on Tyrhys Dolan warranted a penalty. Hackett explained: “The Blackburn Rovers player [Dolan] was very clever, clearly recognising the Leeds United player to his left and waiting for contact to be made before he goes to ground. The Leeds United player rather than challenging with his feet uses his body and right hand/arm slightly outstretched.”
Hackett acknowledged that Dolan was seeking contact, but ultimately deemed Tanaka’s challenge careless. He added: “[Tanaka] then raised his arms to try to say no offence. It is a careless challenge by the Leeds player who then raises his arms in a ‘not me Ref’. The Referee was in a terrific position to correctly award a penalty kick.”
The defeat has significant implications for Leeds United, as they relinquish their top spot in the Championship table. Sunderland now boasts a three-point lead over the Whites.
Leeds United manager Daniel Farke was visibly frustrated with the penalty decision and the referee’s overall performance. Farke was also involved in a heated exchange with Blackburn captain Lewis Travis at the end of the match.
