Gary Lineker Expresses Surprise at Chelsea’s Failure to Score Against Everton

Gary Lineker couldn’t believe Chelsea failed to score in the 0-0 draw against Everton on Sunday. The Blues kept the Premier League high-flyers at bay at Goodison Park on December 22, and matters will only get worse for the visitors with FA action mooted after unsavory chants could be heard from the away end.

However, Lineker couldn’t hide his surprise that the league’s second joint-top goalscorers couldn’t break the deadlock on Merseyside as he discussed the result on The Rest is Football podcast.

He said, “[It’s] surprising, Chelsea, because they’ve been pretty free-scoring as well. But it just shows you that it’s difficult when a team’s organized.”

Everton’s Impressive Performance

Everton followed up a 0-0 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates last weekend with an equally impressive result against Chelsea. While some of the Everton faithful will understand how beneficial the results will be to Merseyside rivals Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, even the most pessimistic supporters must put aside their hatred and focus on the bigger picture.

The Friedkin Group completed their long-awaited takeover of the Toffees on Thursday, December 19, and now the real work begins on awakening the sleeping giant that is Everton.

Despite overcoming Arsenal and Chelsea with two points on the board, only a four-point gap exists between the Blues and Wolves in the relegation zone. However, the trip to the Etihad to face Manchester City on Boxing Day could not arrive at a better time for Sean Dyche – Pep Guardiola has managed one victory in his last 12 outings across all competitions.

Everton’s Defense Looking Solid

Man City will return to winning ways sooner rather than later – the squad possesses too much quality to not – but Everton overcame the odds against two of the Premier League’s top three sides, and could have stolen the three points on Sunday had Jack Harrison showed more composure in the penalty area.

Regardless, James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite have picked up where they left off from last term since reuniting. With the defense looking as solid as ever, there is every chance of leaving Manchester with a point later this week.
