Philippe Clement, the manager of Rangers, may face action from the Scottish Football Association (SFA) after entering the field of play during the halftime break in the match against Celtic on January 2. The Belgian manager confronted referee Don Robertson to express his dissatisfaction with certain decisions made during the first half.
According to Keith Hackett, a former FIFA referee, Clement’s actions were unacceptable and deserving of punishment. “The manager of Rangers entered the field of play at halftime to confront the referee,” Hackett said. “This is unacceptable and disappointing that the referee… did not pull out a yellow.”
Hackett emphasized that the SFA needs to take action to prevent such behavior from becoming the norm. “He can seek clarification about a decision at the end of the game after a cooling-off period (30 minutes),” Hackett added. “Managers or coaches should not publicly confront the referee on the pitch.”
While Clement’s actions may have been driven by frustration, they were not accompanied by any aggressive or abusive behavior. Robertson chose not to punish Clement at the time, and it remains to be seen whether the SFA will take any further action.
Given the current tensions between the SFA and Rangers, it is possible that the governing body may choose to address Clement’s behavior. However, it is also possible that the matter may be dealt with internally, with a warning or other disciplinary action being taken behind closed doors.
In any case, Clement’s actions have sparked a debate about the boundaries of acceptable behavior for managers and coaches during matches. As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how the SFA and other governing bodies address similar incidents in the future.
