Mikel Arteta takes drastic action again over Thomas Partey injury ahead of Chelsea clash
Thomas Partey has just returned to Arsenal action after an injury layoff and the club have sent their physio to keep track on their player while he’s on international duty

Arsenal have flown out their physiotherapist Simon Murphy to Ghana as they look to keep tabs on Thomas Partey during the international break.

The midfielder is away on international duty but has struggled with a groin injury throughout the season, meaning he had missed the last four Premier League outings before making a brief return in the final stages of the win over Manchester City last Sunday.

Mikel Arteta wants to get Partey back firing on all cylinders given how influential he was during Arsenal’s title challenge last term. He’s conscious of the 30-year-old aggravating his injury and, as a result, has decided to send Murphy out to be with Partey while on Ghana duty, as reports The Metro.

The Black Stars are set to face Mexico and the United States in friendlies on Sunday and Wednesday respectively, with Partey due to play some part in those games. Arsenal have previously sent their physiotherapist out to Ghana to manage the player’s injury, also doing so back in March.

Arsenal are dealing with several injury issues. Bukayo Saka was unavailable for the win over City last weekend and he’s withdrawn from England’s current round of international fixtures. Jurrien Timber is also among their long-term absentees.

When they return from the international break, Arsenal head to Chelsea for a London derby and want to ensure Partey is fully fit. The Ghanaian played alongside Granit Xhaka last term but the Swiss star departed in the summer with Declan Rice arriving from West Ham.

It led to rumours of Partey leaving the Emirates but Arteta maintained that he wanted to retain the player and pair him with Rice in the middle of the pitch, which he’s rarely been able to do due to his fitness issues.

He said back in the summer: “Thomas Partey is a super-important player for us and for me and we want him to be in the team. They can play together [he and Rice]. That was in my plans – if you want to improve the squad and have more quality we need players who can play together and need players in the same positions who have to fight for their places.

“It’s something we haven’t had in the last few years. We want to improve that and that’s why we brought in Declan as well. Every time I spoke to him [Partey] and had a conversation with him he’s ready to stay with us.”
