Kyle Walker breaks silence about his clash with Arsenal coach Nicolas Jover after defeat
Kyle Walker has finally explained why he refused to shake the hand of an Arsenal coach after Manchester City’s 1-0 defeat at the Emirates.

Champions City were beaten via a late deflected Gabriel Martinelli strike in North London and tempers flared after the final whistle.

City’s captain Walker has seen in an angry exchange with Nicolas Jover, with the footage widely circulating on social media with multiple angles.

The two sides were heading back to the tunnel when it got heated and soon players like Erling Haaland got involved.

Pep Guardiola refused to comment on the matter despite admitting he knew what happened, but it soon emerged that Walker had snubbed a handshake from Jover.

However, it was then reported that the England defender had done so because Jover, who also worked for City under Guardiola, did the same last season and kept his hands behind his back after Arsenal suffered defeats in both league fixtures.

Walker had remained tight-lipped but has now opened up on the squabble and says he will likely reach out to Jover as it was “probably a bit too much”.

As per Metro, he said: “I don’t like losing. A couple of matches before, Nico, who worked for Man City, he did not want to shake hands when we beat them before.

“When we lost, he wanted to shake my hand and I did not take it lightly. Simple as that.

“I have been concentrating on England but I will probably reach out to him, definitely. I will say, it was probably a bit too much.”

City suffered back-to-back league defeats for the first time in 2018 and Walker believes his reaction sums up the winning mentality he has developed at the Etihad Stadium.

He added: “It shows the standards I have achieved and what I have learnt over the years, it is a big match there and losing in the way we did and so late on hurts.

“But if it did not hurt I am probably at the wrong club as we are title contenders.”

Walker was rested for England’s 1-0 friendly win over Australia but is expected to be back in for the Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy on Tuesday night.

Manchester City defender Kyle Walker got into a heated confrontation with an Arsenal coach after his side lost the Gunners – and Erling Haaland ended up involved.

The incident took place shortly after the full-time whistle blew on a tense game, which saw Arsenal win 1-0.

It took until the 85th minute for the deadlock to be broken, Gabriel Martinelli’s deflected strike leaving City goalkeeper Ederson wrongfooted.

That was enough to send the Emirates into raptures, and the atmosphere did not dampen on or off the pitch once the game concluded.

Sky Sports cameras showed Walker and Haaland surrounded by officials and a member of the Arsenal coaching staff as the two teams returned to the tunnel.

And further footage later showed how the England international had squared up to Gunners set piece coach Nicolas Jover – who used to be at City.

Haaland then walked over to the pair and defended his team-mate, before the incident was broken up and both players were ushered away.

Zoomed in footage showed Jover waving his finger towards Arsenal star Bukayo Saka, who missed the game through injury.

It is unclear as to what caused the initial altercation between Walker and the set piece coach.

City boss Pep Guardiola remained tight-lipped on the situation in his post-match press conference.

He said: “I know what happened, but I don’t want to say. They know it.”

The Spaniard didn’t appear particularly tense about the incident, however, as he laughed after delivering his answer.

On the match in general, Guardiola said: “We had our moments, they had their moments. The rest was equal, and in one action they won.

“Arsenal made it difficult. Congratulations to Arsenal – that’s all I can do. We know exactly what we have to do, and we’ll do it.”

The 1-0 win moves Arsenal up to second, with Mikel Arteta’s side level on 20 points with leaders Tottenham but behind them on goal difference leading into the upcoming international break.

City, meanwhile, drop to third after two successive Premier League defeats, with Guardiola’s side being beaten 2-1 by Wolves at Molineux last Saturday.

A video shows how the scuffle between Kyle Walker and the Arsenal coach unfolded following Manchester City’s defeat.

Gabriel Martinelli scored the only goal of the game as his deflected strike sealed all three points for his side in a huge win at the Emirates.

Emotions were running high after the final whistle with the Arsenal faithful enjoying the victory over their domestic rivals.

Players also felt the pressure as Walker was involved in an altercation with Arsenal’s set-piece coach Nicolas Jover. Check it out below:
As the Man City players left the pitch, Jover, who used to work at the Etihad, approached the defender to shake his hand.

But Walker refused to shake his hand as he reacted angrily to Jover’s gesture, squaring up him. Erling Haaland got involved, too, before chaos ensued as members from both teams got involved.

The 33-year-old, who was still raging, eventually went down the tunnel along with his teammates.

Speaking after the game, Pep Guardiola remained tight-lipped over the incident.

“I know what happened, but I don’t want to say anything. They know it,” he said.

Asked if he was happy with Arsenal’s conduct, he replied: “Yeah, absolutely.”

The Blues have now lost back-to-back league games and have lost three of their last four matches in all competitions, having suffered a 1-0 defeat against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup.

They’re third in the table, with 18 points on the board.

As for Arsenal, they remain unbeaten in the league and occupy second place, level on points with cross-town rivals Tottenham.

“From both sides there wasn’t a lot of chances. Both did good high pressing. It was tight. In the end, one action, we lost. Ten minutes was Arsenal on top and after, equal. We had our moments but in general it was tight. Unfortunately they did it…”

The Blues have now lost back-to-back league games, having lost to Wolves last month.

New footage has emerged of Kyle Walker’s altercation with Arsenal set piece coach Nicolas Jover.

On Sunday Gabriel Martinelli netted a dramatic late winner to see Arsenal earn a statement victory over defending Premier League champions Manchester City.

A tepid game at the Emirates Stadium was given a stunning finale in the 86th minute with both sides having looked certain to settle for a point.

Making his return from a hamstring injury as a substitute, Martinelli’s deflected strike went in off Nathan Ake to earn Arsenal a first league win over City since December 2015 and give Mikel Arteta’s side early momentum in the title race.

Directly after the game footage emerged on Sky Sports Super Sunday of Walker squaring up to Arsenal set piece coach Jover, formally of City.

Walker’s team-mate Erling Haaland subsequently defended his team-mate, with security being forced to intervene to pull away the City pair and direct them down the tunnel.

The Mail Online claimed the altercation was sparked by Jover’s refusal to shake hands with City stars in the previous two league encounters between the sides, both of which Arsenal lost.

The publication alleged that Jover kept his hands firmly behind his back and showed no interest in pleasantries following the defeats.

But the set piece coach is said to have actively sought out Walker on this occasion after Arsenal’s win, which caused the subsequent altercation, new footage of which can be seen below.

City will be bitterly disappointed after the loss, having to go back to December 2018 to recall the taste of successive Premier League defeats, when they lost at home to Crystal Palace and away at Leicester City. The club dropped only three further points that season after the double jolt.
