Bayern Munich’s rising star Jamal Musiala has issued a warning to his teammates ahead of their Champions League play-off second leg showdown against Celtic. The 21-year-old German international has identified Celtic’s Nicolas Kuhn as a major threat, having previously played alongside him at Bayern Munich’s reserve team.
Musiala and Kuhn were part of the Bayern II side that won the Bundesliga third division in 2020. Since then, Musiala has broken into the senior side and established himself as one of Germany’s top players, while Kuhn has impressed at Rapid Vienna and Celtic.
The pair will face each other again on Tuesday at the Allianz Arena, and Musiala is well aware of the danger posed by his former teammate. “Nicolas played really well against us last week,” Musiala said. “At Bayern II, I was 16 or 17 and he was already a big character. We spoke together a lot, had games together and I’ve been delighted to see how he has progressed since then.”
Musiala believes that Kuhn has the potential to break into the German national team, saying, “Everything is possible. Julian (Nagelsmann) has a lot of players to choose from, guys who are playing well, so it’s a decision for him.”
Musiala’s own career has been nothing short of phenomenal, and he is already one of the most feared players in the Champions League. His performance in Germany’s 5-1 thrashing of Scotland in the Euros was particularly impressive, and he is eager to inflict more pain on Celtic.
“I had a lot of fun that night,” Musiala recalled. “It was definitely one of my favourite games of my career so far. We wanted to start the tournament strongly, we knew what we had to bring and after a while it started to be, yeah, a lot of fun. We got into a good rhythm and we made things happen. So hopefully we have the same kind of fun this time too.”
Bayern Munich are heavy favourites to progress to the last 16, but Musiala is taking nothing for granted. “It won’t be an easy game, that’s for sure,” he said. “We experienced that in Glasgow, so we know what’s coming here. We need to be fresh, to be mentally prepared and we have to give 100 percent, to keep on going, to start strong and hopefully get the win.”
With the Champions League final being held at the Allianz Arena this season, the pressure is on Bayern Munich to deliver. However, Musiala is focused on taking things one step at a time. “No one wants excuses,” he said. “We’re always well prepared and ready to perform as well as possible.”
As Bayern Munich prepare to face Celtic, Musiala’s warning to his teammates serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by the Scottish champions. With Kuhn leading the charge, Celtic will be looking to cause an upset and progress to the last 16.
