Mikel Arteta loves a moan like most Premier League managers.
But the FA charging him for his comments following Arsenal’s defeat by Newcastle is ridiculous. If the football authorities don’t want manager’s criticising their officials then they shouldn’t be made to do interviews after a game. Now as a journalist, this is not a call for football bosses to stop talking post match.
We love it, we feed off it and we set them up to come out and say strong comments to give us content in the form of video and the written word. So any journalist who agrees that the FA are right to charge Arteta is cutting off their nose to spite their face.

If we argue he shouldn’t have said what he said then we are saying we don’t want the headlines that sell our papers or content online. It’s a nonsense that he faces a charge for simply airing his views.
Of course he went over the top but he’s emotional. He’s in a high-pressured – albeit well paid – position and his side have just lost a huge game. Then there’s a mic stuck under his chin and a question asked.

I’d be more concerned if he just accepted the decision and moved on. When Arteta got home and watched the clips back he probably cringed. Yet in that moment he said what he felt. There was no accusation of corruption or anything that would slander the officials.
He just said the decision that they made was a disgrace. We criticise players and managers all the time. Why can’t managers criticise officials? Yes there is the risk it leads to abuse but fans don’t need excuses to give them stick, they do it anyways.

Now his employers putting out a club statement the following day was nonsense. Statements should be saved for major issues and not just a few refereeing mishaps.
But now Arteta will no doubt get fined and maybe even a touchline ban. And he will think twice about what he says from now on but that only dilutes the passion and honesty we cry out for from these managers.
Beware the Ineos curse

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been hailed as the saviour to save Manchester United. But United fans will be hoping he finally finds real sporting success at Old Trafford. Because the INEOS brand is hardly ripping it up in other sports. They won the Tour de France in 2019 but have struggled at the top end of cycling since.
In F1, they have a share in the Mercedes team which was competitive in 2021 but is now so far Red Bull they can barely be seen in the rear-view mirror. While their football clubs Nice and in Lausanne-Sport are very much middle of the road.
Yet, it still is a better option for United than being owned by a nation state and a guy who has no experience of running a sporting institution like United.
Just don’t expect miracles from Ratcliffe.
