Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes that his team’s case of Financial Fair Play (FFP) breaches are ‘completely different’ to Everton’s after the Toffees were deducted ten points last week.
An independent commission determined that Sean Dyche’s side had breached the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs), with the Premier League issuing a statement that declared “Everton’s PSR Calculation for the relevant period resulted in a loss of £124.5million”, far exceeding the £105million allowed by the PSRs over that same period.
However, Guardiola’s side are already under an investigation of their own though for 115 alleged breaches of FFP from a period starting in 2009 until 2018, with the independent commission in charge of that case yet to come to a conclusion. The case itself is unlikely to be sorted for years to come given the immense scrutiny it will have to undergo but supporters are already claiming that City are being given preferential treatment to Everton.
In the past, Guardiola came to the defence of his club, claiming that he was adamant his side were innocent of the allegations back in February. He said: “The club proved they were completely innocent. What’s happened since Monday is the same as what happened with UEFA.
“We have already been condemned. You have to understand that 19 teams in the Premier League are accusing us without us having the ability to defend.
“We are lucky we live in a marvellous country where everyone is innocent until proven guilty. We didn’t have this opportunity, we are already sentenced. I am fully convinced we will be [proven] innocent.”

Relegation or automatic expulsion from the Premier League is a serious threat that the Citizens are facing, but Guardiola isn’t so sure. When asked about Everton’s case at his pre-match press conference this afternoon, he said: “Why should I not believe? It’s the lawyers to make the defence in front of the judge. I didn’t change my opinion, we wait and after we accept the resolutions.
“I’m not going to say one word about Everton because I don’t know the reality of what happened. They are two completely different cases. I know people are saying why don’t City go to the Conference [National League] but let’s wait.
“You read it and we should be relegated of course, but nobody knows. All the people who say it don’t know exactly what happened. I haven’t read it all. But wait, what I said a month ago – if we’ve done something wrong we’ll be punished.
“After what will be done, I will be here, the case for Everton and I don’t know what happened but it’s a completely different one. That’s why you cannot compare it.”
Guardiola was also questioned about what punishment would make him leave City, but the Spaniard stood firm in his assessment of the situation, saying: “It’s a good question I will answer when I have the sentence. At the moment we are innocent. But wait and see, if the guilt is proven, I know people want it and prove it, but wait and see and after we’ll come and explain.
“There is more chance to stay than winning the Champions League. Read the newspaper, why Everton have been punished, two different cases, not the same, completely different, other one is more complicated, the lawyer on both sides present the case and then we’ll speak.
“I will not consider my future if we are in League One, I will be more likely to stay.”
