Gary Neville has named one key factor that could help Liverpool win the Premier League this season as the Reds vie with Arsenal and Manchester City for the title.
Liverpool’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Fulham on Sunday has moved them up to second in the Premier League table, sitting two points off league leaders Arsenal with 14 games played.
It turned out to be a good weekend for the Reds with Man City and Tottenham dropping points after a 3-3 draw at the Etihad, while fourth-placed Aston Villa also failed to win away at Bournemouth despite Ollie Watkins’ late strike.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have won nine, drawn four and lost just one game this season, that defeat coming in controversial circumstances away at Tottenham back in September.
Despite only just over a third of the season having been played, there is already plenty of conversation about who could be fighting for the title come next May, with Liverpool among the favourites for this year’s crown.
Former Manchester United defender and Sky Sports pundit Neville has weighed in on the debate, citing Liverpool boss Klopp as the potentially decisive factor in the Reds’ title bid.
Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast, he stated: “Liverpool I’m not sure about but then they’ve got Klopp, so I think that’s a factor because he can win and he’s proven he can win.
“Arsenal have still got to demonstrate in a run-in – and they need to get to that run-in – but they look like they’re on track and can handle a run-in. I’m confident they’ll handle a run-in [better] than last year because last year they went under in every single sense, they failed.
“They have got more this season, I think Arsenal have got what it takes to win a league I think that group of players are very good. There’s a lot to play for but the more points dropped, the more confidence Arsenal will gain.”
He added: “What I would want to see is Arsenal and City in a run-in again, if Liverpool are there as well it becomes a three-horse race – great – but usually in the end, it becomes two. If it’s Arsenal and Manchester City again, it’ll be interesting to see how Arsenal handle it – I do feel like they’ll handle it.”
While Neville appears to be leaning more towards Man City or Arsenal for the 2023/24 title, there is no doubt that Liverpool are currently in the race.
The Reds have been in strong form at the beginning of the season and have looked infinitely better than they did last campaign, largely down to the midfield rebuild that took place in the summer transfer window.
However, Liverpool have sometimes come unstuck in title charges before during the busy festive period and they need to ensure that history doesn’t repeat itself this year.
Liverpool face Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle United at Anfield over the course of the next month, by which point the title picture will look significantly clearer.
