Declan Rice is set to become Arsenal’s second-highest player if the Gunners are able to sign the West Ham midfielder, according to reports.

Arsenal took a significant step in the race to land Rice’s signature after Manchester City stuck a pin in their pursuit on Wednesday morning.

Pep Guardiola was reportedly unwilling to match the north London side’s £105 million bid, putting Mikel Arteta in pole position to secure the 24-year-old’s services.

Providing an update on the situation, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano tweeted: “Arsenal are working on the structure of the deal after £100m plus £5m add ons official bid submitted on Tuesday night for Declan Rice.

“Arsenal and West Ham, in contact to discuss payment terms, instalments and more details.”

But with Arsenal widely expected to reach an agreement with the Hammers, how much is the England international expected to earn at the Emirates?

Rice has ‘verbally agreed’ personal terms with Arsenal ahead of a potential summer move, it has been claimed by Football Insider’s Fraser Fletcher. While he has been tipped to become one of the club’s top earners.

According to a report from the Daily Star last month, it is believed the player currently earns £60,000-a-week at the London Stadium, with his salary expected to quadruple to £240,000-a-week at Arsenal.

The increase would see him become the Gunners second-highest paid player behind Gabriel Jesus, according to Spotrac.

In the meantime, Arteta is on the brink of completing a £65m deal with Chelsea to sign Germany international Kai Havertz, with Ajax defender Jurrien Timber also close to a move.

However, Rice is reportedly keen on Arsenal, who had already verbally indicated their intention to make a second bid.

Mikel Arteta wants to sign two new midfielders this summer, with Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka both on the cusp of leaving north London.

And beyond Rice, Arsenal are interested in Southampton’s Roméo Lavia. While they are yet to have made a bid for Belgium international, an approach for the teenager is not said to be tied to the outcome of their pursuit of Rice.

The north Londoners are reportedly in talks with Southampton and the 19-year-old’s representatives.

Rice is a key target for Arsenal and manager Mikel Arteta, with the Spaniard keen to bolster his midfield ahead of another Premier League title charge.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed the Gunners are ‘advancing in talks’ to sign Southampton starlet Romeo Lavia, who is valued at £50 million – although this move is not affected by the Rice pursuit.

The West Ham captain lifted the Europa Conference League trophy earlier this month – his first trophy at senior level.

According to The Guardian, the Gunners were told, prior to the Europa Conference League final, that Rice was worth £80 million – which likely explains the size of their first bid that was turned down.

However, West Ham went on to win the final, defeating Fiorentina 2-1. As a result, they secured qualification for next season’s Europa League.

The report claims that it is precisely that triumph that has caused a delay to negotiations over Rice, with the Hammers now requesting a fee of around £100 million to sell the midfielder.

Whether Arsenal are willing to stretch to that fee remains unclear, but they are said to remain ‘confident’ of securing the England international’s signature.

The completion of a deal for the 24-year-old would represent one of the moves of the summer by Arteta’s side – but it is going to cost a significant amount in order to do so.

When asked on talkSPORT last week about whether the Europa Conference League final could be Rice’s last game for the club, West Ham chairman David Sullivan replied: “I think it has to be. We promised him he could go. He set his heart on going.

“You can’t ask for a man who has committed more to us this season. In due course, he has to get on and we have to get a replacement – or several replacements.

“It’s not something we want to happen. We offered him £200,000-a-week 18 months ago. He turned it down.”

Reporting on Bayern Munich’s interest in Rice, German outlet Ran Sport claimed earlier this week that the midfielder is keen to move to Arsenal.

“Declan Rice told David Sullivan a while ago that he was only going to Arsenal,” a source told the German outlet.

“This deal has actually been a done deal for a while.”

It comes after West Ham chairman Sullivan confirmed that Rice had likely played his last game for the club in the Conference League final win over Fiorentina earlier this month.

Sullivan told talkSPORT: “I think it has to be.

“We promised him he could go. He set his heart on going. You can’t ask for a man who has committed more to us this season.

“In due course, he has to get on and we have to get a replacement — or several replacements.

“It’s not something we want to happen. We offered him £200,000 a week 18 months ago. He turned it down. It’s cost him £10million to stay at West Ham in that time (in lost wages). And he wants to go.

“You can’t keep a player who doesn’t want to be there.”
