Arsenal are not fully convinced over a move for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz ahead of the January transfer window, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
The Gunners are likely to invest in multiple departments next month. A marquee striker is said to be the main priority for the club, but they could also pursue a new central midfielder.
Luiz has been constantly linked with the north London giants for some period of time, but Ornstein has said that the Gunners are not planning an approach this winter.
In a Q&A session on The Athletic, Ornstein responded to the rumours over Luiz by emphasising that not everyone at Arsenal is fully convinced that he is the right profile for them.
He said: “They went for Luiz late last January but I have no information to suggest they plan to do so this time round. As great a player as he is, not everyone at Arsenal is fully convinced he is the right profile for them. And the feeling at Villa is that there is no chance he leaves.”
ARSENAL MAY HAVE OTHER MIDFIELD TARGETS IN MIND
The Gunners have been linked with Luiz since the summer of 2022. Back then, they made a late approach before deadline day, but Villa had no plans to part ways with his services.
The club tried again at the turn of the year, but they were unsuccessful in their pursuit. The hierarchy eventually opted for a deal to sign Jorginho from London rivals Chelsea.
There is still speculation about Arsenal’s interest in Luiz, but judging by what Ornstein said, they could be looking to sign someone else than the €60 million-rated (£52m) star.
Luiz does not fit into Arsenal’s profile but the club are also unlikely to land him next month, considering Villa are now genuine contenders for the Premier League title.
In our view, Everton’s Amadou Onana would be a better choice. He has similar attributes as Luiz but has fared better when it comes to winning duels and ball recoveries.
The Belgian is also three years younger than the former Manchester City man. He could be prised away from Everton for around £50m next month.
