‘We want to sign him for free’: Arteta told Arsenal might actually end up signing £80m attacker for free

David Ornstein makes free transfer claim when it comes to Ivan Toney signing for Arsenale transfer claim when it comes to Ivan Toney signing for Arsenal

Ivan Toney is a player of interest to Arsenal but the Gunners could well end up biding their time to land the Brentford striker.

Toney is due back next month following his lengthy ban and there is plenty of talk about him moving to another club.

Arsenal are known admirers as they continue to search for a new striker. Others, such as Tottenham and Chelsea, are also keen on Toney.

However, speaking to the BBC today, The Athletic’s David Ornstein has said that while there is interest in Toney, clubs could actually choose to wait until he’s going for free in 2025.

Arsenal could sign Ivan Toney for free
Speaking about Toney’s situation at Brentford, the respected journalist had some interesting points to make when it came to the England striker’s future.

“This is a player who is under contract until the summer of 2025 so it’s Brentford’s last opportunity to maximise their value in him. That doesn’t mean it’s going to happen though because the price is going to be really high. They’d like £100m, and who is prepared to pay that? I think there’s been some interest but no real contact at this stage,” Ornstein said.

“So you’ve got Arsenal, rumoured to be after Ivan Toney but I don’t know of any developments on that front. Their plan for a striker would be more to look towards the summer for financial reasons. I wouldn’t rule out free-agency in the summer of 2025. Brentford would want to tie him down to a new deal but I don’t think they’d get to the salary levels he’d want. Maybe a release-clause in there, but I think that would be a massive risk for Ivan Toney.”

A long time to wait
It’s interesting that Ornstein mentions Toney going on a free here. Obviously, he would be a huge coup for anyone one a free transfer.

But there is more to think about here and the summer of 2025 is still quite some way away. Arsenal, for example, need a number nine in the here and now. There might never be a better chance for them to win the league and the time could be now for them to strike.

In terms of Toney, he is now 27 and coming into his prime years after a period out. Does he wait around until he’s 29 to make a move to the one of the top dogs? Or does he push for it now while he’s at his best physically?

All are big questions that we’ll end up getting answers to. But Toney remains a wanted man and there could well be some twitchy clubs in January who hit the panic button and simply pay up.

Brentford want at least £80m, or £100m as Ornstein says. That’s huge money. But for someone like Arsenal, it might just be a price worth paying.
