Tottenham Hotspur have a golden opportunity to put themselves back in the Premier League title conversation over the next few weeks, thanks to a quirk in the fixture schedule.
While Spurs are not currently considered one of the main title contenders, sitting 11 points behind leaders Arsenal, their upcoming run of games could change that narrative quickly if they can take advantage. Here’s why:
- This weekend, Tottenham play Fulham on Saturday while title rivals Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool are all not in Premier League action due to FA Cup commitments.[1] A win would cut Spurs’ gap to Arsenal to 8 points.
- After the international break, Tottenham host Luton Town on March 30th. Another victory there, combined with Arsenal traveling to face Man City the next day, could see Spurs close to within just 5 points of the top.[1]
- In April and early May, Tottenham still have to face all of Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool.[5] While extremely challenging, this also gives Spurs a huge opportunity to directly impact the title race and boost their own chances.
- Tottenham are unbeaten against that trio so far this season, drawing at Man City and Arsenal while beating Liverpool at home.[5] This will give them confidence.
Of course, Spurs will need to be nearly perfect to truly get back in the title mix, especially with games in hand. Postecoglou has them playing excellent football but overhauling an 11-point gap is a tall order.
However, the combination of their rivals being distracted by the FA Cup this weekend and then Spurs’ looming clashes with the top 3 does present a path, however unlikely, for them to at least enter the title conversation in April if they can string together some wins.[1] At minimum, those matches will heavily impact the top of the table, even if Tottenham can’t quite get there themselves.
The key for Spurs is taking care of business against Fulham and Luton when given the chance to gain ground. While still major underdogs, the fixture list has opened a door for them to make things very interesting if they can walk through it. The next few weeks will reveal if they can take advantage of this opportunity.
