Arsenal look to muscle in on Man Utd target as Mikel Arteta set to open talks over bargain goal machine

Mehdi Taremi and Goncalo Inacio, Porto vs Sporting Lisbon
Reports in Portugal claim Arsenal are set to challenge Manchester United for the signature of Porto star Mehdi Taremi during the summer transfer window.

The Gunners are preparing for a season back in the Champions League and have already added quality. Kai Havertz has arrived from Chelsea as Mikel Arteta identifies players who can help push the club to the next level. Having challenged Manchester City for a large part of last season, the north Londoners fell short.

They ran out of steam when it mattered most and the Spanish tactician is looking to do something about it.

Declan Rice is being targeted and the England star’s non-stop engine and ability on the ball would provide class.

But it appears as though the manager also wants someone with an ability to put the ball in the back of the net with regularity.

To that end he is said to be targeting Iran international Taremi.

The 30-year-old has been prolific in front of goal at all of his clubs. And he has bagged 58 times in the Portuguese top flight from 99 outings.

That success rate attracted the attention of United scouts.

And, having scored 22 league goals in 2022-2023, he finds himself the subject of interest from the Old Trafford giants.

However, Portuguese outlet O Jogo are reporting that Arsenal are also interested in the hitman.

And the report adds that talks will soon open with Porto officials over his possible signing.

Aside from his talent in front of goal, Taremi’s price tag is also inviting to the Premier League duo.

Taremi eye-catching strike rate turning heads
Taremi clearly has an eye for goal, with 80 goals from 147 appearances in all competitions at Porto. And he has excelled in front of goal at all of his previous clubs.

It is true that he played exclusively in the Middle East before moving to Portugal.

But a successful season with Primeira Liga outfit Rio Ave before three at Porto proved he was able to step up.

And a return of 191 career goals from 369 appearances is one that cannot be ignored.

United were mentioned in connection with Taremi earlier this month.

It emerged he had rejected an approach from Everton, with a desire to play at the highest level in the Premier League.

And it was said that Erik ten Hag eyed the man with 36 international goals as a cheaper alternative to Harry Kane.

He will certainly be considerably cheaper than the England skipper, with a price tag of just £17m suggested.

That will not scare either United or Arsenal but a bidding war might prompt Porto to up their demands.

Taremi was identified as a player who could have been brought in during the January transfer window.

United opted for Wout Weghorst instead despite Rio Ferdinand suggesting Taremi was a better option.

Weghorst returned to Burnley at the end of his loan spell having failed to find the net for United.

That is something that Taremi has never done, scoring at least a goal every other game at the majority of his clubs.

Whether Porto let him go remains to be seen. But, with Arsenal now on the case, it seems likely that the Premier League beckons for the powerful striker.
