Everton takeover: Wyness provides hijack update after ‘unbelievable’ development

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested “three or four groups” could be ready to hijack 777 Partners’ takeover deal after “unbelievable dithering” from the Premier League.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the club’s new stadium is an asset that “everyone wants” – and could end up being leased to the Merseysiders if a deal goes through.

777 Partners struck a takeover agreement with chairman Farhad Moshiri in September last year (2023), but concerns over their sources of funding have delayed Premier League approval.

It has been widely reported that the US-based group must meet conditions set by top-flight chiefs, including providing proof of funds, before a deal will be green-lit.

Everton recently published their 2022-23 accounts which revealed a statutory loss of £89.1million – and have already been docked eight points for financial breaches so far this season.

Wyness urged a quick decision on 777’s deal with other groups considering entering the process.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The Premier League need to make a decision, for crying out loud!

“They’re supposed to have set conditions for 777 – but have they been met? Is there a time deadline?

“Rumours are circulating again about maybe three or four potential groups, ready to come in and hijack the deal.

“Everyone seems to want that stadium as an asset, leasing it back to the club – that may be the solution for Everton going forward.

“But we need to know.

“The fan group at Everton have sent a very good letter to the Premier League, accusing them of taking the club to deep levels of uncertainty.

“The dithering that has gone on is unbelievable.”
