West Ham United: David Moyes makes new contract admission ahead of Bayer Leverkusen clash

West Ham United manager David Moyes has admitted that the Irons’ clash with Bayer Leverkusen will not have a “bearing” on his decision to extend his contract.

The Hammers welcome Xabi Alonso’s side to the London Stadium on Thursday (18 April) and will need to overturn a two-goal deficit having been well beaten by the Bundesliga champions in the first leg of their quarterfinal.

Moyes’ current deal with the Irons expires at the end of the season and while the Scotsman has suggested he has been offered a new contract, he insists he won’t make a decision based on Thursday’s match.

Speaking in a press conference on Wednesday (17 April) he said: “I don’t think so at all, it’s not got a bearing on my decision. Let’s be fair it wasn’t too long ago that we were talking about trying to avoid relegation.”

There is so much uncertainty around the London Stadium as the end of the season draws closer and a large part of that is based around the fact the Hammers still don’t know who will be in charge come the start of next season.

Moyes’ defensive first style has been widely criticised by supporters, with some going as far as to suggest it harmed the Irons in the first leg against Leverkusen, but his overall record in East London speaks for itself.

It isn’t good for a team to not know who their manager will be this close to the end of the season, especially as West Ham begin to prepare for the off-season. Hopefully, some clarity will emerge sooner rather than later.

A heavy defeat to Leverkusen could be damning and may see even more supporters begin to turn on the West Ham boss. However, an impressive comeback could see the tide change and help the Scotsman pull some fans back onside.
