Everton to start next season on minus points after new deduction twist – Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed his old side are set to start the 2024-25 campaign on minus points if they remain in the Premier League.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the Merseysiders could end up with a three-point deduction, but are “most likely” to be docked one point.
Earlier this month, Everton were handed a two-point deduction by an independent commission for breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in the 2022-23 season by £16.6million.
But a subsequent hearing is due over the summer – with another potential points deduction coming.
Everton could get another three-point deduction next season, says Wyness
The Premier League claim Everton have overspent by the £105million threshold by another £6.5million – while the club insist those funds were part of the Bramley-Moore Dock stadium construction.
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “If Everton were to be relegated this season, there wouldn’t be any points deduction because they wouldn’t be in the Premier League.
“If they stay up, I think this could mean up to another three points – but most likely a one-point deduction – to start the season.
“More and more detail is coming out all the time, and there are so many subjective judgements to be made – it’s hard to know where we are going.”
