Everton: Alan Shearer fumes at ’embarrassing’ Nottingham Forest controversy at Goodison Park

Alan Shearer has raged at Nottingham Forest regarding the club’s statement about VAR official Stuart Attwell after the controversial decisions in the 2-0 Everton win at Goodison Park.

The former Newcastle player questioned what Forest were thinking putting out the statement in which they suggested the official may have been biased as he supports Luton Town.

He went on to share his view that both Attwell and Anthony Taylor had “terrible” performances at Goodison, but insisted Forest lacked class by making their statement.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast [22 April], Shearer stated: “Honestly, before we go anywhere, let’s just say well done to Everton.

“Very much like at the top of the table, at this stage of the season, it doesn’t matter how you play or what decisions you get, just get the three points and that’s all that matters.

“But what on earth are Forest doing putting that statement out? It’s an absolute embarrassment, isn’t it? What on earth are they thinking about? It’s embarrassing.

“I thought Anthony Taylor and Stuart Attwell had a terrible afternoon, but you can’t behave like that if you’re a top professional football club. There’s just no class. You cannot be putting statements out like that.”

Shearer’s anger matches that of most supporters when seeing the statement made via Forest’s social media accounts – it seemed a bizarre route to take and a huge overreaction to a poor refereeing display.

This comes shortly after Mark Clattenburg, former Premier League referee and current advisor at Forest, insisted that the club were “victimised” by the officials, labelling the controversial decisions a “joke” after they went against the visitors.

The decisions in question came with Ashley Young involved in all three – initially kicking the foot of Giovanni Reyna, then appearing to handle the ball in the box and later seemingly bringing down Callum Hudson-Odoi inside the area.

For Everton, Shearer’s initial statement rings true. It does not matter where the points come from and in which controversial circumstances bring them, all that matters is that they can add them to their tally in the fight against relegation.
