I lived the dream at Everton but wanted to swap places with the supporters before cup final

Everton legend Derek Mountfield has fond memories of the 1984 FA Cup final victory over Watford, 40 years ago today. Mountfield, a lifelong Evertonian, recalls the team’s preparations under manager Howard Kendall, who maintained his usual routine, arriving at Wembley the day before the game. Mountfield admits he would have loved to be among the fans soaking up the atmosphere, but instead, he was part of the team that brought the trophy back to Goodison Park.

The 2-0 win, courtesy of goals from Graeme Sharp and Andy Gray, ended a 14-year silverware drought for the Toffees. Mountfield remembers the electric atmosphere at Wembley, the roar of the crowd, and the long walk from behind the goal to the pitch. He also cherishes the moment he lifted the trophy, thinking about the great players who had done so before him.

After the game, Mountfield and his teammates celebrated with a night out in town, and the next day, they paraded the trophy on an open-top bus tour. Mountfield realizes the significance of that victory for the fans, giving them pride and joy, and putting Everton back on the map. Although he never saw Everton lift a trophy as a fan, he feels privileged to have been part of the team that achieved greatness.
