“Something I strive for” – Everton player wants to follow the footsteps of Richarlison, wants transfer to ‘top club’, will use Euros as showcase

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana has expressed his desire to use the upcoming Euros as a showcase to attract top clubs, with the aim of securing a transfer to a “top club”. This is in the footsteps of Everton legend, Richarlison who is now playing top-flight football in Tottenham.

In an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws, Onana said: “That happens almost automatically. At previous tournaments, you have seen that the players who did well make the step up to the top clubs. That’s something I strive for.”

The 22-year-old Belgian international has been named in Domenico Tedesco’s squad for the Euros and is focusing on recovering both physically and mentally ahead of the tournament. Onana made 30 league appearances for Everton last season, which finished 16th in the Premier League.

When asked about his preparation for the Euros, Onana said: “I’m always ready for these kinds of big tournaments. These are the matches that every footballer wants to play.”

Regarding his future, Onana’s deal with Everton lasts until 2027, but there have been claims that he could leave the club in the summer transfer window. Onana has hinted that he is looking to take advantage of the Euros to showcase his skills and attract top clubs.

“I feel like presenting myself to the European top and showing what I have to offer. This European Championship is a stage,” he added.

Onana also emphasized the importance of taking a break from football, saying: “I really try to do that. Personally, I think it’s important to let go of football for a while and think about something else. That’s good, because it’s been a long year. A difficult season, with highs and lows. Having a little time for myself and being able to take a breather was welcome.”

It remains to be seen if Onana’s performances at the Euros will attract the attention of top clubs, but one thing is certain – he is eager to make a name for himself on the big stage.
