Sunderland defender Leo Hjelde has been speaking about his future as his loan spell away from the Stadium of Light nears its conclusion.

Sunderland defender Leo Hjelde says he is “open to anything” as he prepares for a crucial summer regarding his long-term future.
The 22-year-old joined Italian side Salernitana on a straight loan deal in the January window after finding himself frozen out of the first-team picture under the current regime on Wearside. Hjelde has impressed during his time in Serie B, becoming a regular starter and helping the club push for a play-off spot.
Despite his strong performances abroad, the Norwegian U21 international has struggled to make an impact since his permanent move from Leeds United to Sunderland. With the Black Cats currently well-stocked in the left-back and central defensive positions, a permanent exit appears the most likely outcome this summer.
Speaking to Italian media about whether he expects to return to the North East or stay in Italy, Hjelde admitted that the decision may not be entirely in his hands.
“I am really enjoying my football here,” Hjelde said. “The style of play suits me and I have felt a lot of confidence from the coach and the fans. In football, you never know what is around the corner.
“I still have a contract with Sunderland, so I have to respect that. I will go back in the summer and see what the club wants to do. If they want to sell me or loan me again, we will have to look at the options. I am open to anything, but the most important thing for me at this stage of my career is to be playing every week.”
Sunderland are expected to demand a fee that sees them recoup the majority of the investment made when they signed the defender. Salernitana are understood to be keen on making the move permanent, though much will depend on their league status and financial flexibility heading into the new campaign.
Hjelde’s current contract at the Stadium of Light runs until the summer of 2028, meaning Sunderland remain in a relatively strong position should they choose to negotiate a sale.
