Robbie Keane is once again at the centre of growing managerial speculation, with reports linking him to a surprise return to Tottenham at a critical moment in their season.
The North London side are searching for a new manager after parting ways with Igor Tudor following a difficult spell that lasted just seven games.
Results failed to improve under the Croatian, with only one point taken from a possible twelve in the league. That run has left Spurs hovering just above the relegation zone with seven matches remaining, turning the final stretch into a tense battle for survival.
Amid the uncertainty, Keane has emerged as a name under consideration. The former Spurs striker has been building his reputation in management and recently enjoyed success with Ferencvaros, guiding them to a league title and a place in the Europa League round of sixteen. His progress has not gone unnoticed, especially given his strong ties to Tottenham from his playing days.
Keane has also been linked with the managerial role at Celtic in recent months, with reports suggesting he remains in the frame to take over from interim boss Martin O’Neill this summer. However, attention may now shift back to North London, where he could be brought in on a short term basis to steady the club.
According to talkSPORT, the 45 year old is one of several candidates being considered, alongside experienced names such as Sean Dyche, Adi Hutter and former Spurs midfielder Ryan Mason.
The report also claims that Tottenham’s top target remains Roberto De Zerbi, with the club already exploring the possibility of appointing him before the end of the campaign.
The idea of Keane returning has also been backed by former players who believe his connection with the club could provide a lift at a crucial time. Speaking on TNT Sports, Joe Cole and Peter Crouch questioned why Tottenham did not turn to someone like Keane earlier.
“This was absolutely nailed on for someone like a Robbie Keane who has gone and proved himself and is a club legend. Or Glen Hoddle or Harry Redknapp, someone who has experience at Tottenham.”
Crouch added: “At least with (those appointments) you get the crowd up, galvanise it and everyone is behind you.
“They (the fans) are willing you to do well and if it ultimately doesn’t work, at least the crowd have been lifted and you feel like you’ve had that 12th man to try and get out of it.”
With pressure building and time running out, Tottenham face a huge decision. Whether they turn to a familiar figure like Keane or push for a bigger name, the next appointment could define how their season ends.
