“No One Deserves to Sleep on a Sidewalk”: Bruno Guimarães Donates Entire £24.8 Million ($30.9M) Bonus to Shelter North East

NEWCASTLE, UK — In a press conference that will be remembered far beyond football, Bruno Guimarães stunned the room by announcing a remarkable act of generosity.

The Newcastle United midfielder has donated £24.8 million ($30.9 million)—his entire performance bonuses and sponsorship earnings from the past year—to fund a major homelessness project in the city.

Community housing project

Guimarães, 26, confirmed that every penny will go toward building a new housing initiative in partnership with Shelter North East.

“I’ve seen the effects of homelessness firsthand growing up. This isn’t charity; it’s a responsibility. No one deserves to sleep on a sidewalk.”

The Guimarães Haven Project

The ambitious project will include:

  • 150 permanent housing units
  • 250 emergency shelter beds
  • Full-time support services
  • Mental health and job training programs

The facility, expected to be built in the Byker area, will begin construction in early 2024.

From Brazil to Newcastle

Guimarães spoke emotionally about his upbringing in Rio de Janeiro, recalling the struggles he witnessed growing up.

“In Brazil, I saw people living with nothing. When I came to Newcastle, I saw the same struggle in a different place. I promised myself I would act if I ever had the means,” he said.

The midfielder revealed that his experience walking through the city during winter deeply affected him, motivating this life-changing decision.

A Rare Act in Modern Football

While many footballers contribute to charities, donating an entire year’s bonus and sponsorship income is almost unheard of.

The funds reportedly include earnings from endorsements, performance bonuses, and commercial deals accumulated during Newcastle’s successful season.

“He asked for the real cost of solving rough sleeping. We sent the figures—and he funded it fully,” said a Shelter North East representative.

Club and City Reaction

Newcastle United and manager Eddie Howe praised the gesture, describing it as one of the most powerful moments they’ve witnessed in football.

“This is more than football. This is legacy,” Howe said.

The club also confirmed additional support through its foundation to help run the facility.

More Than Just Football

The initiative comes at a critical time, with rising homelessness figures across the region.

Beyond housing, the project will offer long-term support systems designed to help people rebuild their lives.

Sources close to the player also revealed that fatherhood played a role in shaping his decision, as Guimarães wants to leave a meaningful legacy for his son.

Final Word

When asked if he feared losing such a large amount of money, Guimarães responded simply:

“Money returns. Lives do not. I’m not losing anything—I’m putting it where it matters most.”

In a sport often dominated by wealth and excess, this moment stands apart—a powerful reminder of football’s ability to change lives beyond the pitch.
