Danny Rohl, feeling the heat at Glasgow Rangers, may point to the way he initially managed to steady the ship in the wake of Russell Martin’s swift departure, although such positivity is quickly evaporating following a rotten run of form in recent weeks.
Before the split, Rohl had lost just one league game following his October appointment, yet when it’s truly counted, the German, and his struggling side, have been found wanting.

The looming end to the campaign may well spare the 37-year-old from the axe, although such a dismal run, alongside a mere third-place finish, must surely plunge his future into doubt.

It was just five years ago that Rangers had the title sewn up in early March under Steven Gerrard, going on to end the 2020/21 season unbeaten in the Premiership and with a mammoth 25-point advantage over rivals Celtic.
Failure to truly kick on that summer in the transfer market seemingly played its part in Gerrard’s decision to seal a move to Aston Villa soon after, with the Gers having lacked any sense of stability since then.
There were significant high points under his successor, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, following a Scottish Cup win and stunning Europa League run, although even the Dutchman quickly came unstuck, sacked just a matter of months after that night in Seville.

His replacement, Michael Beale, won 13 of his first 14 games in charge, yet the Englishman was still left empty-handed, while overseeing a wayward summer of recruitment in 2023 that saw the likes of Danilo, Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers all arrive at Ibrox.
Philippe Clement did at least last longer than his two predecessors, having spent 498 days in the dugout – ahead of both Beale (308) and Van Bronckhorst (369) – although once again there was little progress, even while claiming Scottish League Cup success in 2023.
The less said about the aforementioned Martin, the better, while as for Rohl, this recent patch of form has sunk his stock significantly.
It’s difficult to view his appointment as anything other than a disappointment at this stage, turfed out of both cup competitions by Martin O’Neill’s side, while now 11 points off the pace at the summit.

There’s been no official word on Rohl’s future, although in the view of Rangers podcaster, Scott Cameron, it could already be time to “cut the cord”, with the German showing the “same red flags” that were there under Clement.

A dream replacement might well be that man Gerrard, after having held talks over the position back in the autumn, although the Englishman is notably being touted for a move to Burnley, following the Clarets’ relegation to the Championship.
If it is not to be the 45-year-old, the Gers could potentially make their best move since that appointment by turning to the experienced head of Sean Dyche, the out-of-work coach also said to have met with Kevin Thelwell following Martin’s dismissal.

Speaking to Football FanCast back in April 2025, club legend Ally McCoist was certainly intrigued by the possibility of Dyche replacing Clement, suggesting he would bring a real “fight” to Ibrox, following his prior work at the likes of Everton and Burnley.
He may not be the most glamorous name – having described himself as the “most old-school manager in the world” in the past – yet with Rangers’ gamble on the youthful pairing of Martin and Rohl having backfired, a change of direction might well be needed.

Dyche, still without a club after leaving Nottingham Forest earlier this year, is a proven manager with a proven record in England’s top flight, as well as in the second tier, having overseen over 400 games at Turf Moor most notably.
He twice led the Clarets to promotion to the Premier League, even leading the club into Europe at one stage, while he also steered Everton to safety after replacing Frank Lampard on Merseyside.
Even in his brief time at Forest, the 54-year-old still played a key part in the club’s survival, picking up 22 points from his 18 league games in charge, after Ange Postecoglou had endured a Wilfried Nancy-style disaster at the City Ground.
As is evident, much of Dyche’s work to date has been as a firefighter, the man clubs turn to when in danger of relegation, although now could be the time for an opportunity at a club expected to win and dominate.

As McCoist noted, his teams are always “very very competitive”, an old-fashioned coach who favours substance over style, results over philosophy.
That would be a refreshing change after the experiments with both Martin and Rohl, with the weight of the pressure and responsibility only likely to weigh heavily on such young, emerging managers.

Dyche has his detractors, but he’d certainly take this job head-on, perhaps bringing back a sense of stability and a winning mentality that has not truly been seen since Gerrard.
