Ilia Gruev’s place at Leeds United is under growing pressure, and the club’s move for Hidemasa Morita could be the clearest sign yet that his role is no longer secure.
Leeds are closing in on a deal for Morita, whose contract expires in June, allowing him to arrive without a transfer fee. His profile is built on control in possession, having completed 777 of 892 passes this season.
That directly overlaps with Gruev’s role as a deeper midfielder, where retention and structure are key. The decision to target Morita suggests Leeds are actively seeking reinforcement in that exact position.

Leeds are also preparing a £35m bid for Andre, another midfielder whose strengths lie in ball-winning and distribution. His output includes 75 tackles and 26 interceptions, and a pass accuracy above 90%
This reinforces a clear recruitment pattern, with Leeds targeting players who operate in the same areas of the pitch as Gruev. It leaves limited room for a player who does not offer versatility beyond his role.
Gruev has already seen his influence decline, making 23 appearances but only 15 starts in the league this season. He has also been on the bench 10 times, underlining a shift away from being a consistent starter.
That situation has been compounded by a serious setback, with the midfielder now out for the rest of the season with a meniscus injury. With no opportunity to influence selection before the summer, there is now a clear pathway where he does not feature again.
