Glasgow’s Old Firm might be used to sitting at the top of the Scottish Premiership, but Derek McInnes has just thrown down a challenge they can’t ignore.
In comments that have sparked a storm across social media, the Hearts boss didn’t mince words about Rangers’ financial power or the fact that his team is standing above them in the table this season despite a massive gap in resources.
Speaking ahead of Hearts’ trip to Livingston, McInnes acknowledged the obvious: Rangers have spent heavily and, on paper, should be dominating. But then he delivered the line that has left Glasgow fans fuming.
“But I expect Rangers at home are favourites to win the game. Rangers being top of the league is no real surprise – any team who spends what they’ve spent should be expected to be top,” he said.
It’s the follow-up that really stings:
“If you look across all the leagues in Europe, there’s not a team who’s been at the top of the league for as long or as close to the end of the season, with the disparity in what we’ve got in terms of spending power and wages that we can pay against Rangers and Celtic.”
The subtext is clear. Hearts, with far fewer resources, have been punching above their weight this season and McInnes is quietly proud of it.
The brilliance of McInnes’ statement lies in its subtlety. He doesn’t insult Rangers or Celtic directly. Instead, he frames the financial reality in stark terms, letting the numbers do the talking.
Hearts being above Rangers in the table is almost an indictment of the Old Firm’s dominance, without McInnes ever saying it outright.
In other words, while Rangers and Celtic are expected to be at the top, McInnes’ men are quietly proving that money isn’t everything. And for fans of the Hoops and the Light Blues, that’s a hard pill to swallow.
McInnes also praised his squad for their remarkable season so far, highlighting how far they’ve come despite the financial disparity.
“It says so much for our team to be where we are for so long. We’re probably higher than where we all expected at the start of the campaign. That pleases me no end,” he said.
It’s a statement of belief and pride, but it’s also a reminder that Hearts have achieved something truly extraordinary this season and in doing so, they’ve exposed just how vulnerable the Old Firm’s grip on Scottish football can be.
Despite the pointed comments, McInnes remains focused on the pitch. With a crucial game against Livingston on the horizon, he knows the team must deliver to maintain their advantage.
“Our attention is on Livingston. They’re probably in last-chance saloon in terms of getting enough wins to stay in the league – and we know they can get a result. They’ll thrive off being live on Sky, off the crowd and off the atmosphere.”
Still, it’s hard to ignore the wider message: McInnes’ words aren’t just about preparation. They’re a warning to Celtic and Rangers. Even with all their spending, even with all the history, this season has proven that the old hierarchies can be challenged and Hearts are leading the way.
