Amid increased scrutiny at Ibrox, Rohl has emerged as a target for the Bundesliga giants.
Danny Rohl has previously admitted he wants to manage in the Bundesliga “as soon as possible” with Wolfsburg now tracking the Rangers boss.
Rohl took charge at Ibrox last October and revived the club’s campaign after a disastrous start under Russell Martin.
But after steering the club back into the Premiership title race, defeat to Hearts on Monday means the Light Blues are likely to end the season without a trophy.
The 37-year-old is facing growing criticism from his own supporters with some Ibrox diehards calling for a change in the dugout this summer.
Amid the speculation, reports in Germany claim that Wolfsburg have made Rohl their top target with veteran boss Dieter Hecking set to move upstairs to a football director role at the end of the season.
And while in charge of Sheffield Wednesday last summer, Rohl told Bild that he was keen to fast-track a move to the German top flight.
Asked when he might be in the dugout of a Bundesliga club, Rohl said: “If it were up to me, as soon as possible.
“The Bundesliga is obviously something special because I grew up with it. For me, it’s always about working at the highest level. I want to compete against the best teams, with the best coaches.
“I have the good feeling that I’ve been able to generate significant added value over the last 18, 19 months in a demanding league with very different playing styles.”
Out of work Steven Gerrard has consistently linked with a return to Ibrox.
The Liverpool icon has been out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq in January 2025, with the Saudi side facing a relegation scrap.
Ahead of Rohl being named Martin’s successor, Gerrard was locked in talks with Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe of 49ers Enterprises.
However, he walked away from a blockbuster return to the Glasgow giants after several rounds of discussions.
The Liverpool icon earned hero status during his time in the Ibrox dugout after he ended Celtic’s stranglehold on the Scottish Premiership title in 2021.
Amid speculation around the Rangers’ hot seat and links over a move to Burnley for Gerrard, his former Ibrox assistant Gary McAllister has opened up on his pal’s future.
He told the Liverpool Echo: “Just listening to him speak, I think if the project is right, with the right backing and support, then yes [he will return to management].
“I think he’s happy with what he’s doing at the moment and enjoying working on TV, but I’m speaking hypothetically here. If the right job came up, I’m sure he’d be interested.”
While Gerrard has regularly taken on punditry duties in recent months, former Scotland international McAllister insists he will return to the dugout at some stage:
“I see him quite a lot on TV at the moment and speaking publicly.
“He’ll definitely be back. A bit like Frank Lampard, the love for the game doesn’t disappear. It’s in his blood.”
