“That’s not a foul. 100 per cent it’s not a foul.
“If it’s given as a foul, VAR isn’t going to overrule it. But VAR is only there to comment on clear and obvious errors.
“So what’s happened there is an opinion, and we share the same opinion.
“If I was VAR and the referee gave a foul, I could support it and say you know what? Yeah he’s shoved him, he’s nudged him.
“But it’s just absolutely not. And Iheanacho looking and waiting to see what’s going to happen, that’s a symptom of where we are with VAR; they’re not sure they can celebrate a goal.
“I’ve got no issue with the decision at all.
“Not just Astley, but you look at the goalkeeper and the players surrounding him, nobody is looking for a foul.”
And just like that, the so called controversy starts to unravel.
Because what was being framed as a clear injustice suddenly looks far more ordinary. A coming together. A moment of contact that happens countless times in every match. The kind of situation that lives in the grey area of football rather than the black and white.
Roache even acknowledged the fine margins. Had the referee blown for a foul, VAR likely would not have intervened. But that works both ways. It was never a clear and obvious error.
It was a judgement call.
And in this case, the judgement stood.
Which leaves the outrage hanging in an uncomfortable place.
Because the idea that Dundee were robbed does not match the reality of the decision. The officials did not intervene because there was nothing clear enough to overturn. No definitive push. No obvious foul. Just football.
Meanwhile, the outcome remains unchanged.
Celtic have the win. The three points are secured. The gap at the top is down to three. And the title race continues to build.
But the debate will not disappear that easily.
